At 46 years of age and on the cusp of marriage, transgender filmmaker Quen turns the camera on herself to confront a lifetime of stigma in conservative Singapore. When news breaks of a trans girl’s mistreatment, her personal reflection becomes a powerful act of collective resistance, documenting the frustrations of today’s trans community and the erasure of queer history in Singapore’s once-infamous Bugis Street. Some Women is a raw, intimate, and urgent love letter to a country that continues to marginalize its queer citizens.
Director
Quen WONG is a Singaporean filmmaker based in the Czech Republic. In 2018, she directed Building Bridges, a short film created as part of a long-running protest campaign against the law that criminalises sex between men. Previously, Quen was an award-winning promo producer and content creator with National Geographic Channel Asia. Some Women is Quen’s debut feature film.
