In late 1980s New York, three women cross paths by chance: ZHAO Hong (Stchingowa) from Shanghai, Lee Fung-jiau (Maggie CHEUNG) from Hong Kong, and Wang Hsiung-ping (Sylvia CHANG) from Taiwan. Zhao longs to bring her mother to America, a wish her Chinese-American husband cannot begin to understand. Sharp and resourceful, Lee manages a Chinese restaurant with ease, yet finds herself adrift in matters of the heart. Wang dreams of taking centre stage, only to face repeated setbacks because of her identity. Having crossed oceans and struggled to find their place in a foreign land, did they ever truly have a homeland to call their own?
