In 1988, after repeated rejections, LI Hong (Maggie CHEUNG), a woman from Panyu, Guangdong, finally obtains a visa to the United States. Leaving behind her husband, ZHOU Nansheng (Tony LEUNG Ka-Fai), and their young child, she sets off alone for New York, hoping to reunite with her family one day. But a year later, Nansheng receives a letter from her demanding a divorce. In 1989, he smuggles himself into New York in search of his wife. Penniless and wandering the streets, he befriends Jane (Hayley MAN), a 15-year-old Chinese American girl who helps him gradually piece together the hardships LI Hong has endured over the past year. When the couple finally reunites, LI Hong is no longer the woman he remembers. What price must one pay in pursuit of freedom and hope?
